Experience Dyslexia®

Experience Dyslexia®

Experience Dyslexia® is a hands-on workshop that lets participants experience some of the challenges and frustrations faced by people with a language-based learning disability. This simulation provides a lively, thought-provoking activity for teachers, parents, or anyone interested in better understanding the lives of individuals with dyslexia. Participants rotate among learning stations that simulate language-related tasks that may be encountered in the classroom and workplace.

After attending a simulation workshop, one parent wrote us: “my husband and I first attended the simulation two years ago as concerned parents.  After the simulation, we had our son tested and learned that he has dyslexia. He has been getting private instruction and is doing well.  We want to let you know that you are making a difference in the community. Our family will forever be grateful for what we learned at the Dyslexia Simulation.“

What is Dyslexia?

In addition, the ERI board offers a panel discussion, “What is Dyslexia?” that gives the perspective of various experts including a psychologist, neuropsychologist, an educator, a parent, an educational therapist, and an adult with dyslexia. The information provided includes what dyslexia isn’t (pervasive myths), what it is (characteristics and how they manifest in the classroom), and what red flags to look for at different ages. The panel also discusses early screening, effective intervention methods, advocacy, what to look for in a diagnostic assessment, impact on siblings, and tips for teachers.
